PAWLEYS/LITCHFIELD RESTAURANTS
-
Frank's -- Just south of the Pawleys North Causeway on the east side of US-17. Moderately expensive with indoor and "outback" (heated when necessary) seating. Reservations highly recommended. And ... though best known for its food, its two bars (inside & outback) are very nice indeed. 10434 Ocean Hwy. 843-237-3030 or 843-237-1581 Website Photo
-
Bistro 217 -- On the west side of US-17 just north of the Island Shops in a strip mall called Downtown Pawley's, this quaint partially outdoor location serves excellent dishes to a loyal local crowd and recurring visitors -- open for both lunch and dinner. Dinner reservations recommended. 10707 Hwy 17. 843-235-8217 Website Photo
-
Chive Blossom Cafe -- This newly-relocated establishment, on the North Pawleys Island Causeway (in the former Orobosa's), is an absolute delight. Previously located in a smaller building on Highway 17, Chive Blossom serves outstanding food for lunch and dinner. They are closed Sundays all year and Mondays during the winter. Reservations recommended. 843-237-1438
-
Quigley's Pint & Plate -- This British-pub-like bar and restaurant is a real breath of fresh air with its in-house brewed beer and its upscale pub-grub offerings. Weather permitting, you can drink and dine on their porch overlooking a small man-made lake. And their happy hour is quite a value at the bar, especially on Mondays. Entertainment often on the weekends. In the Mingo's complex on Willbrook Blvd., behind the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. 843-237-7010
-
Habaneros -- Half mile north of Pawleys North Causeway on the west side of US-17. A genuine Mexican-family-run restaurant serving inexpensive and excellent Tex Mex. Love their fish tacos! And their margaritas are especially good as well. 11151 Ocean Hwy. 866-679-2514 or 843-235-9595 Photo Website
-
Litchfield Beach Fish House - Just south of the entrance to (south) Litchfield Beach. Has a lot of fans, most especially for their fried seafood. Website
-
Eggs Up Grill -- This area favorite has moved from Litchfield Beach to the shopping center at Willbrook Blvd. and Highway 17 (the location of the Piggly Wiggly). This is the place for breakfast in Pawleys Island. Very easy on the budget, but expect a wait on the weekends, especially in season. 843-237-7313 Website
-
Webster's Grill & Tavern -- In the office/hotel complex of the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort, Webster's serves a very good breakfast buffet and reasonably priced other meals as well. 843-235-5516 Website
-
Sanford's Southern Fried Smoke House -- In the Mingo's complex behind the Piggly Wiggly, this re-done place is now (2011) owned by two local men who know what they are doing. A great bar atmosphere and, weather permitting, you can overlook a small man-made lake right next to Quigley's (above). Their daily happy hour is quite a value and do ask for some free boiled peanuts at the bar. Folks have raved about their ribs, so it sounds like you should give them a try. 843-237-5400
-
Austin's Ocean One -- At the Litchfield Inn on ("south") Litchfield Beach -- Owner/chef Bill Austin is a Culinary Institute of America graduate and everyone seems to enjoy this oceanfront dining experience, although we've not been there yet. Reservations recommended. 843-235-8700 Website
-
Roz's Rice Mill Cafe - In the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops complex. Popular for lunch and a great atmosphere for dinner in nice weather. It is right next to the now-closed High Hammock Restaurant (see below). 843-235-0196 Website
-
Captain John's Seafood Grill -- This small establishment, on the west side of US-17 at the entrance to (south) Litchfield Beach, serves very tasty seafood at a fairly reasonable price. 13057 Ocean Hwy. 843-235-9300 Website
-
High Hammock -- This restaurant (formerly Louis') on the grounds of the Hammock Shops closed down early 2011. No word on a replacement yet.
-
Rocco's Restaurant & Rocfish Grill - This restaurant sadly closed down in 2010.
Others:
- Pawleys Island Tavern - 10635 Hwy 17 behind the Island Shops just north of the North Causeway. Many locals call the "PIT" their home away from home. Often has live entertainment.
Website
- Island Cafe & Deli - 10221 US Hwy 17 (west side) at the Island Shops just north of the Pawleys North Causeway. Good food at affordable prices. Has specially-priced lobster or shrimp nights mid-week. 843-237-9527
Website
- Emi Bistro & Sushi Bar - 47 A Da Gullah Way. Newer place has many raving about its fresh sushi, handmade dumplings and other Asian dishes. 843-235-2313 Website
- Mayor's House - 2614 Hwy 17 across from road to (south) Litchfield Beach. 843-237-9082
- Hanser House - 14360 Hwy 17 just north of Litchfield-by-the-Sea entrance. Breakfast, lunch & dinner. Food is pretty good but the atmosphere is terrible. 843-235-3021 Website
MURRELLS INLET RESTAURANTS & BARS
-
Dead Dog Saloon -- At the south end of the Marsh Walk on the east side of US-17 Business. Its outside bar is our favorite in the area based on its outstanding view of the marsh, its assortment of great and inexpensive appetizers and its "personality." Free live entertainment every night out on the deck. 4079 US-17 Business. 843-651-0664 Website

-
Flo's Place -- A mile or so north of the Marsh Walk on the east side of US-17 Business. Unique bar and very good seafood with a New Orleans flair. 843-651-7222 Website
-
Drunken Jack's -- At the center of the Marsh Walk on the east side of US-17 Business. Nice bar downstairs often with a singer on the stage and endless popcorn. Restaurant is touristy, but is fairly well done for a very reasonable price and has a decent salad bar. On the weekends you'll find a wait, but it moves pretty fast. 843-651-2044 Website
-
Lee's Inlet Kitchen -- A mile or so south of the Marsh Walk on the west side of US-17 Business. One of the true Murrells Inlet classics serving fine seafood at reasonable prices since 1948. 843-651-2881 Website
-
Bliss Restaurant & Lounge -- On the west side of US-17 Business, south of Lee's Inlet Kitchen. New for 2011, this place was all the rage in very early 2011. We had a magnificent lunch here, but when we went back for dinner with reservations, the seating took forever, the service was miserably slow and servers were downright rude (although the food was still excellent). I guess we'd have to say the jury's still out on this one; I sure hope they can fix the service. Reservations for dinner are advised. 843-651-7222 (Don't confuse this with a Bliss up in Surfside Beach.)
-
Nance's Creekfront Restaurant -- A mile or so south of the Marsh Walk on the east side of US-17 Business. Another classic Murrells Inlet spot with no pretentions to atmosphere, just tremendous fresh seafood at very affordable prices. 843-651-2696 Website
-
Hot Fish Club -- The first good dining spot you'll see on the east side of US-17 Business as you approach from Pawleys. A fun outside bar and pretty good seafood dining inside. 4911 US-17 Business. 843-357-2084 Website
-
Wahoo's Raw Bar at Divine's Fish House -- At the north end of the Marsh Walk on the east side of US-17 Business. An atmospheric and friendly bar with good seafood appetizers, full meals and the only sushi I've found around here. 3393 17-Business. 843-357-2084 Website
A couple that are NOT RECOMMENDED:
- Capt. Dave's Dockside - Just south of Drunken Jack's. In the past has always brought a lot of tourists in, but the food has usually been quite bad. Approach with caution, i.e. ask some locals before trying this one. Most I've met wouldn't eat here if they gave the food away.
- Bovine's - Just north of the Wahoo Bar. Have tried 3 times with no plate at the table worth eating. More recent reviews on the 'Net are very mixed although everyone says it's too expensive for the food they serve.
GEORGETOWN RESTAURANTS
-
Rice Paddy -- On the north side of Front Street, this is the best dining in Georgetown. A bit expensive, but a memorable experience. Reservations recommended. Closed Sunday. 732 Front St. 843-546-2021
-
River Room -- Across from the Rice Paddy on the Sampit River Walk, this is a more moderate restaurant with a broader appeal in a very atmospheric setting. Closed Sunday. 801 Front St. 843-527-4110
AREA ATTRACTIONS
-
All Saints Episcopal Church -- On Kings River Road about a half mile south of Litchfield Plantation, this historic church traces its roots back to revolutionary times. Graveyard features the gravestone engraved simply "Alice;" see the story.

-
Pawleys Island Hammock Shop Village -- On the east side of US-17, just north of the Pawleys Island North Causeway traffic light. In addition to being a prime shopping venue, the enchanting grounds of this seemingly endless collection of the best shops in the area will delight everyone. There are bars, restaurants (especially High Hammock - see above), snack stands, over 25 specialty stores and, of course, the Original Hammock Shop, a great source for area books and other souvenirs. 10880 Ocean Highway, 843-237-9122

-
Island Shops -- On the west side of US-17, just north of the Pawleys Island North Causeway traffic light, and across from the Hammock Shop (above). There are a number of nice shops but the real drawing card is the bevy of swans who make the man-made waterways of the center their home. The kids and photographers will love them. 843-237-9122 Photo
-
Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet -- Drive north on US-17 and, at 3.6 miles from Litchfield Beach Resort, take the slight right onto 17-Business for another 2.7 miles. Park at one of the bigger restaurants like Drunken Jack's, Divine's or Dead Dog Saloon. Just walk around them to the Marsh Walk itself. Very picturesque. Website Photos
-
Brookgreen Gardens -- On the west side of US-17, a few miles north of the Litchfield Beach Resort traffic light. Beautiful 9,000-acre grounds abounding in statuary (over 900 sculptures) founded by Archer and Anne Hyatt Huntington. 843-235-6000 or 800-849-1931 Website
-
Atalaya in Huntington State Park -- On the east side of US-17, across from and barely north of Brookgreen Gardens. Known sometimes as the Atalaya “castle,” this structure - a National Historic Landmark - is open for tours daily. It was the winter home of benefactor Archer Huntington (1870-1955) and his internationally recognized sculptor wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973). Built over 60 years ago, Huntington used only his intimate knowledge of Moorish architecture along the Spanish Mediterranean coast in lieu of blueprints to build this unique dwelling. 843-237-4440 Website
